Date: 2013-09-28 06:10 pm (UTC)Have you ever watched "The Mighty Celt"? She really shows her acting chops in it, and it also has Robert Carlyle in it, whom she holds her own against. No mean feat, there. I didn't know whether to hate SGU, because of what it did to SGA, or hope it succeeded because, Robert Carlyle. God knows I've taken jobs to pay the bills. (I hated it. He was slumming so he could pay the bills. I was embarrassed for him).

I watched the first 7 episodes with an open mind but I hated it. Probably two years later (?), I skipped to episode 10 on Netflix, watched from there and enjoyed most of it. It had its moments. It was totally Battlestar Gate, millennials edition, but it also had some likable characters (Chloe, Rush -- sometimes, Brody, Volker, Eli -- sometimes, Matt was...okay...). This has gotten completely off the point. Why do I dooooo that?? :)

Date: 2013-10-01 12:57 am (UTC)Hee, it was just opposite for me. I first saw him in "The Full Monty", developed an unholy crush, (he looks WAY to much like my Scottish American Dad), then moved onto "Hamish MacBeth", "Carla's Song", "Mighty Celt", etc. by the time I got to "Trainspotters", "Wendigo", and his later works, I as shocked at how well he plays evil. His earlier, gentle roles, combined with his looks, remind me too much of my Dad to make his later roles (which he has stated he prefers, due to the characters being more complex or ambiguous)the ones that I don't identify.
He even made his character in that one with Samuel Jackson sympathetic, despite being batshit crazy. (More than happy to lend you my copy of Mighty Celt. I bought it because at the time Netflix didn't carry it. Warning: Evil man kills dogs)Let me know.
See, I like the rambling, because now I'm willing to give later SGU a chance. Miss Porcupine loved it after it found its footing; several other forums I read have staunchly defended its second season, and you warned me off the few episodes I had watched, and hated. Seriously, the most secret world government agency recruits through online video games? GAH!
More off the point for EVERYONE! It's win/win.

Date: 2013-10-03 07:52 pm (UTC)Back to the point, though, you actually might enjoy SGU since you're a big Carlyle fan because he's definitely one of the best things about the show, but watch out because he's not just sharp like Rodney's sharp, he's basically firebreathing.
SGU -- yeah, it's a mixed bag. I think it had a lot of potential but it got off to a rocky start. Don't get me started on the recruitment video game. That was...so...dumb... Oh man. So dumb. Ugh. Let me know if you like it or hate it. Nobody I know ever takes my recs (except Sleepy Hollow and Revenge, which all my girls loved). ;p
